This Week in Immigration: Parole Programs End, New Screening Rules, and Country-Specific Restrictions
👨👩👧👦 Family Reunification Parole Programs Are Ending
DHS announced it is ending all categorical Family Reunification Parole (FRP) programs for individuals from Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, and Honduras.
Parole granted under these programs will end on January 14, 2026, unless the individual has a pending green card application (Form I-485) filed by December 15, 2025.
Employment authorization tied to FRP parole will also be revoked when parole ends. Individuals without another lawful status must depart the U.S. before termination and may use the CBP Home App, which DHS says may include travel and financial assistance for qualifying individuals.
🏅 USCIS Updates Policy for Professional Athlete Green Cards
USCIS updated its policy manual to address how green card petitions for professional athletes are reviewed under the Department of Labor’s FLAG system.
Because FLAG filings no longer include minimum job requirements, USCIS may now request additional evidence with Form I-140 petitions if that information is missing from contracts or supporting documents.
💼 Sponsors May Be Asked to Repay Public Benefits
DHS confirmed that some immigrant sponsors are being contacted and asked to repay certain taxpayer-funded benefits used by sponsored immigrants, reinforcing existing sponsorship obligations.
🛂 Expanded Travel Restrictions Announced
A new Presidential Proclamation expands entry restrictions for nationals of multiple countries due to vetting, documentation, and enforcement concerns.
Some countries face full restrictions, others partial limitations, and a few have had prior restrictions adjusted or lifted. Exceptions remain for lawful permanent residents, certain visa holders, diplomats, athletes, and approved waivers.
🌍TPS for Ethiopia Is Being Terminated
DHS announced the end of Temporary Protected Status for Ethiopia, stating that country conditions no longer meet TPS requirements.
Individuals without another lawful status have 60 days to depart voluntarily. DHS encourages use of the CBP Home App, which may include a plane ticket and financial incentive. After February 13, 2026, individuals without status may be subject to removal.
